Endless Possibilities

Last night Nick and I hosted dinner for the missionaries in our ward from our church. We always have fun when they come over, laughing and talking about all sorts of things. It was no exception last night when Elder West asked us how adoption stuff was going and if we were crossing our fingers for a future basketball player. We said we can always hope for that because with our genes, our biological children would only have hope of being great at the following sports, some of which were debated at length if they could in fact be categorized as such:

1. Curling

2. Bowling

3. Golf

4. Baseball/Softball
This is Babe Ruth. Lean-ness not required for greatness.

This is not an all inclusive list, but most other sports one can benefit from being tall and/or lean. Not naturally in our children's gene pool.

Now I know what you're thinking: "But Rachel, didn't you play sports, A LOT of sports as a kid and throughout high school?" My answer is yes, I did. I participated in baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, hockey, and a myriad of playground activities. I was small and fairly quick, which got me to a certain point. But let me show you an award I received in my second to last year of my amateur basketball career.

Being a "Poised Player" in 8th grade is like getting the "hardest worker" award in 1st grade...which is also the award I received on my high school softball team. Bummer.

So there you have it. My secret is out. I am very active, I love playing sports, but in no way did I ever have a promising future in that arena. Poise and hard work are great qualities, but nothing you can put on a resume to apply for a sports scholarship. No, my future is in public policy, where poise and hard work actually help your applications rather than detract from "what is she not telling us?"

This is one reason why adoption is so exciting! The possibilities are truly endless for what our children will be or what they'll look like. Maybe we will have alternate future options than sitting frozen while watching hours of endlessly thrilling curling matches.

Haha. Poised eh? That at least means you were awake on the court. We can't all be sports stars, thank goodness!
